2012-2013 Monthly Meetings
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month from September to June at the Community
House in Kennebunkport. Refreshments are served during social time before each program.
September 6 – Sue Gesing, a board member of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at University of
Southern Maine, discussed continuing educational opportunities at OLLI. OLLI offers stimulating, year round, courses and workshops in the liberal arts and sciences for Mainers over age 50.
October 4 – Kathleen Sutherland, a member of the World Affairs Council of Maine will lead a presentation about current affairs in Egypt and the Middle East. The focus will be the historical, political, social, and economic factors that contributed to the overthrow of these regimes, which continue to challenge the nation-states. The emphasis will be on Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Bahrain, Libya, and Syria. Kathleen will also reflect on the implications for the U.S. role in the Middle East and the Arab upheaval. Ms. Sutherland was born
and raised in Cairo, Egypt and is Associate Professor Emeritus, at Bowling
Green State University, where she taught Political Science.
November 1 – Lisa Lassey, Associate Director of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, will report on two recent projects of the organization- restoration of the Goat Island Lighthouse and the acquisition of Timber Point. She is passionate about bettering her community and the outdoors. Lisa works on grant writing, newsletters, public relations, event planning, volunteer management and more for the Conservation Trust. In addition to her duties there, she is also President Elect of the Kennebunk Rotary Club. Prior to working for KCT, Lisa spent ten years serving the poor in Haiti and Guatemala. Much of her time was spent leading teams from the United States to work in primitive villages. Lisa graduated from the University of New Hampshire
with a degree in Communications. She lives in West Kennebunk with her two daughters, Samantha and Carly.

January 3 – Jeremy D’Entremont has been called the leading expert on New England's historic lighthouses. He is the author of nine books, including The Lighthouses of Maine, The Lighthouse Handbook: New England, and Great Shipwrecks of the Maine Coast. He is past president and historian for the American
Lighthouse Foundation and founder of Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses. His comprehensive website on New England lighthouses, www.lighthouse.cc, was launched in 1997. He has appeared on the History Channel, Travel Channel, Public Television, and National Public Radio speaking about lighthouse history. Jeremy's presentation, Lighthouses of Southern Maine and the New Hampshire Coast, will focus on the lighthouses from the Isles of Shoals to Kennebunkport, with an emphasis on each location's dramatic and colorful human interest stories. Also included will be current preservation efforts.
February 7 – Our February speaker is Geoff Iacuessa, Executive Vice President & General Manager of the Portland Sea Dogs. The 2013 season will be Geoff's third season as the Sea Dogs' Executive Vice President & General Manager and 13th season with the organization. He began his career with the team as an intern in 2001 and was hired as Director of Group Sales prior to the 2002 season. In 2004 Geoff became the Director of Sales and Promotions and after the 2006 season Geoff was promoted to Assistant General Manager for Sales and Promotions.In 2011 he was named to the Portland Press Herald's "40 under 40" list, recognizing 40 local business leaders under the age of 40. Geoff is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst with a degree in sport management. In addition to his work with the Sea Dogs Geoff has served on the Maine Children's Cancer Program Board of Directors since March of 2005 and serves on the Portland Community Chamber's Economic Development & City Affairs Committee. Geoff lives in South Portland with his wife Kristie and son Hudson.

4 – Dan Carr is a board member of the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA). He will provide an introduction to MITA and share his experiences of nearly 10 years of exploration of the Maine coast via kayak, including a 13 day, 250 mile paddle from Portland to Machias.

2 – Donald Michel will discuss his passion for genealogy. Don has studied extensively in
the field and is a frequent speaker. His greatest satisfaction comes from helping people gain the knowledge they need to find the story of their family’s past generations.
